In conjunction with the Visual Poetry Workshop that Karri Kokko was hosting in Finland, he set up a display with some of the stuff i have sent him thru the mail. It was on exhibit at the Helsinki Library . I was stoked when i first saw the photos he sent me, kind of putting my work into a different perspective from how i usually view it & it's weird how contextual elements have an effect on the reception of work.

Also, you may take notice of the little typewriter-key box pictured above, it was made by my sister Wendy (or Loo Loo, as i sometimes call her) & it warms my heart that her creative work was also a part of the display, she has been a vital element in my life & an everpresent support of foundational strength for me, without all of the help she has given me, i would have washed away in the gutters of this lousy world a long time ago.

Nico Vassilakis' iTouch Visual Letter Compositions (formerly vispo) and THIS: an essay

are these the first iTouch vispoems? probably not, but i'll say they are till i see different. does it bother me that technology enables such quick and finished pieces? yes. does it bother me that financially these gadgets are unapproachable to most? yes. does it bother me that advertising creates a desire for these items to be bought? yes. does it foretell an end to vispo as we know it? perhaps. does sensing a sea change count for something? perhaps. can the iTouch and future gadgets unravel the visual literature we grew up on? yes and no. as long as the grid is up it archives the past. there will come a day when what we generate electronically will surpass what is produced physically. will nature respond to these kinds of intended assaults? yes, but just once. and that's all it'll take. does visual letter art mean anything? no. is visual letter art a reflection of our own barrage of textual suffocation? yes, it's an alignment of possible meanings. but does it mean anything? yes, it intends to enhance the potential of how we see.

This. Written hundreds of times. Like this. This, this, this, this, this, etcetera. Till it fills a page or a poster. And somewhere in the center. Just slightly on the left side of the center of the page. The is in one of the this is in red. The rest of the text is printed in black.

In this do these contain anything interesting at all? Besides being derivative of many examples of advertising and early concrete poetry. Namely, the 1960s. Is there any value to such an image?

This sort of image and technique is lost in a world of infinitely more active and eye-catching visuals. It’s nearly a static museum moment. Captured in boredom.

It’s entirely possible that you can create a totally forgettable piece. In doing so you have fulfilled your duty as an artist. Well, it’s entirely likely you will. You see, you are just no good.

In order for something to rise to the top it needs to travel up and over other things. These other things are mostly made up of people like you. And so it is your duty to be the fodder for someone else to rise above.

Not standing out amongst this talent is not an unimportant thing. It is critical that you exist. That you take your place in the background. Without merit and recognition. History is filled with your type. Pebbles in a great big wall.

So is the going before, the going back or attempting a non-derivative piece even possible? How far back does one have to go? What lateral direction? What line of lineage to follow?

What also gets tried is leaping into the future in hopes of anticipating the next new thing. This is done by following current trends – you know – tomorrow’s invisibles – and guessing what will catch peoples’ eye.

The former, I think, will at least yield you a minor education yet assure you poverty.

Poets are in the same boat too. Their lack of financial reward is so laughable that the pebbles rest on poet’s backs before building the great big wall. Even less than fodder.

That said, it’s not just rising to the top, but staying there. Even this conversation I’m having is destined for the dust heap. Do we still literally have dust heaps? Never defile yourself by saying you are up and coming, because, of course, in no time you will be down and going. With any luck you merely ARE, without direction. And I don’t mean to vaguely mimic Buddhist ideology.

Then there’s Tina Turner’s ‘what’s art got to do with it?’ paradigm of functioning. That being the product is less important than the marketing of that product. That’s the sound of souls crying. Crashing under the weight of their own greed and vanity.

These temptations beguile us. Trick these artists into fulfilling their duty. As the amount of attention increases, so does the amount of attention sought. The more you seek, the more invisible it becomes. This has nothing to do with talent. It is the difference between feeding ego with shovels or teaspoons. It still needs feeding. Every person does.

Because you see a name doesn’t mean that name is worth anything. Because a name has been hanging around for ten minutes doesn’t mean it’ll be here 50 years from now. Because a name has a loyal fan base, it doesn’t mean their work is any good.

Finding out what is useful is three quarters the battle. By useful I mean your sensibilities are aroused and intentions are engaged. Finding this out is crucial. The other quarter is knowing what you like and why. By why, I mean you don’t need to know specifics, but intuition – knowing when to twist it. Well, I’ve managed to make this clichéd to the ear.

Once again has to do with creating that which has given you the most satisfying and lucrative response. And refashioning it endlessly to the delight of any audience you have mustered. Are these positive results and are they exploratory in nature. It takes a bit longer for them to reach the dust heap. But for 99% of them – they’re fodder.

Stability is a desired position. To know and even anticipate the next facet of your work for the next 5-10 years. Who wouldn’t love that? Who wouldn’t want that stable field – removing the guesswork for just a little while? To not step in unknown quagmires, but stand firm on predictable ground. It’s not wrong to want that. It’s not wrong to need a break.

Turning your fucked up face toward and then away from the business end of popular culture. Can you recall the dream where you were discussing with celestial entities. The diving board that brings you the unsaid universe. The pivot of excellent knowing.

In other words, used to be I could distinguish between creepy self-involvement and diligence worth respecting. Like sifting through swathes of jazz to suss out what compels and what disintegrates at lights first contact. Now I am lost – I mean I know what should be good, but I have dwindled the ability to generate an opinion on excellence.

So what effect does the computer have on creating work meant to be promoted - besides everything? Ultimately, it must be sent or visited – otherwise linked to - and this is how the fire spreading starts. It is basic knowledge that bloggers can say anything and commenters are free to respond any way they want. There seems to be no cap on this paradigm. Of course, saying anything is an open and democratic necessity. But it comes with pitfalls.

Though it seems I am a product of my own dilemma – the disease is further embedded – as it is I cannot extricate myself from it.

The futility of standing in a hallway with my work xeroxed and enlarged – tacked up to show its transparency. An ebook printed out and shown at a gallery. Can that be something? It might be, I simply can’t tell.

Lines are being drawn. Have been drawn. There is no purchase stable enough to steady myself. Any belief is strewn with haphazard entries that undo sturdy conclusions. Second-guessing along as you go. This is derivative too.

A misplaced item is a displaced item that stands out waiting to be recovered.

This structure is nervous – the zeal has left and what remains is an emptiness of lack, of confidence. The sense that I am to be my own words - however vague or dry they have become – is a sinking feeling that is to be faced right up at the microphone. Always faced with being false or the regret of momentum’s end.

The outcome was a hangover hook that suited the scene. A dismal prep with a fine cannon shot. In other words, I found my clown center and made the reading lift off the ground.

Don’t perfume your hand and wave it around. Respect communication, as you would an elder.

This is a poster. This is you looking at a poster. The arrangement is a known quantity. It melts along your eye line. The treacherous possibilities honed to a point. And that point delights at making complex what would otherwise be easy.

There’s an easy brown I’m thinking of for this. Brown background with black text and, of course, the red is. So a question comes up – this is what? (A Patti Smith album on your in-flight music selection)

To be absorbed is to live with possibilities – to explore the available – to get lost and found – to make mistakes that can be fixed. To be absorbed is to be in the system. Safe there. To not be absorbed is death. Impossible quotations. It’s unlinkably dim. No satellite connection. These aren’t even the youth anymore, as it used to be – these are the old. The non wi-fi elderly.

We’re several steps beyond an outbreak – it’s a mainstream condition. A breakneck wild fire pace spreading across land – screen by screen.

Last month, i got a generous envelope from Reed Altemus, he has long been active & engaged as a cultural worker operating on a few different fields of practice, but most notably he's been intensely involved in copyart & mailart -- and developed a wide body of work to show for it & i would also posit that he's somewhat of a historian, preserving choice examples of xerography and sharing them with others, of which i am very thankful, his Tonerworks blog is a wonderful archive & on top of that he's a frequent publisher of important works -- as i've said before on this blog, the Live Matter series is an exquisite experience of visutactile interaction.

There is a work that Reed did called "More Than 20 Genuine Certified Authentic Signatures!" inwhich a large thumbprint sequentially enlargens page by page, not only is it cool to see that progressive effect, but to notice how the print gradually changes is like a morphology of basic physical identity -- but, what really peels my banana is that it is the most beautiful fused toner i've ever seen in my life! A uniform dense matte black that almost seems three dimensional, also it's printed on Strathmore cotton paper so maybe that adds to the depthly texture -- Reed knows what he's doing onna photocopier & such technical mastery shines through in the finished end result.

Speaking of 3D, when i saw that blue page with the red shadows i flipp'd my lids, i broke out my 3D glasses & gave it a gander & it was the first time i've experienced 3D visual poetry! i gotta pretty good little collection of 3D glasses because i gotta pretty good little collection of 3D comics, but it's never entered my mind to try & do some 3D visual poetry -- if that wasn't enough, there was a strong heat wrinkle on the page (which often happens when one re-feeds the same sheet to get an overlay effect because the paper gets so hot), but the wrinkle totally fits with the composition & becomes an integral part of the page, a unique occurance which adds a very special touch to an already eyesum piece.

Soon, a special issue of KAIRAN magazine edited by Gianni Simone will come out which focuses on copyart, Reed has written an essay for that issue & here's an excerpt about the smear & stretch of copy motion:

"Copy motion, creating effects by moving the material during the scanning process, is another classical copy art technique. Techniques which are now considered standard by copy artists were probably discovered or invented through common unintentional mistakes which sometimes arise naturally in the process of using a copier. An original was accidentally nudged while it was being scanned by the copier. The resulting mistake, which looked like a smeared version of the original had taken on expressive qualities of dynamic motion. Someone is copying pages from a book and forgets to turn the page over to print on the backside of the page and suddenly there are two book pages copied one over the other, a metaphor for information overload. Another person casually sets the contents of her pockets on the glass of the copier while she looks for change and accidentally brushes the copy button- the resulting “copy” is an instant visual art study of personal effects. It’s no big leap to believing that these discoveries have happened time and again over the years, repeating themselves for each individual. The person who chooses to further develop these happy accidents is a potential copy-artist. "

Just today, i gotta packet in the post from Satu Kaikkonen which contained a copy of her book
Kaukana vierailta mailta,
but it was no ordinary copy, it was like an altered book with all kinds of handwork & drawing & writing -- i think that's cool as all get-out, to create an altered book from one of your own books. It really is a thing of beauty & it will receive a top-shelf placement on my bookshelf fersure, it's something special.

Also included was an incredible series of A4 sized color vispo/abstract comic pages that are laminated & contain a richness of intense composition mixed in blue & create a quiet calm when i look at them.

You’re not setting up the gags visually and you’re rushing to the snapper. It seems to me you’ve got the zingers right there at the beginning, in panel No. 1, and although I have to admit you got Nancy and Sluggo in some crackerjack predicaments, I don’t see how they got there.

For instance, putting Nancy and Sluggo in the garbage cans is a good gag, but in my opinion, you can’t have them in there for all three panels. How did they get there? Same thing when you had them buried in the sand. I like to do beach gags, but I don’t think that having Nancy buried up to her waist in the first two panels and then up to her neck in the third one is adequately explained, and I’ve been at this game for a while now. Also, why would Sluggo be facing in the opposite direction when he’s talking to her?"

For me there is no debate, as i mentioned already:
because of new technologies(xeroxmachine) artists started experimenting with xerox & some artists & curators did question the "quality".. for me mail-art is about communication, about the process not about the artifact.. Ray Johnson cut up his collages & send them out, Robin Crozier etc

.... i have send out also hundreds of collages, galleryowners will question the moneyvalue & my act of sending them away..?

What is quality when, i mean hypes & trends build the prices in the artmarket, mail-art is outside this market so our value cannot be measured,how can you measure communication-art ? I feel good about quality when a mail-art exchange works & brings me joy,...

Some curators try to determine quality to cut up the mail-artnetwork in pieces to sell it to the market :artists'books,livre d'artistes, small limited editions -assemblings , collages etc...

I admit i sell some collages to stay alive to pay the rent & my postagestamps.Quality or selection is impossible to measure , so use your own personal taste as inspiration to choose ,send & live it ,.. we can not correspond with everybody but recently i see more activity of e-mailartists then mail-artists (who send their work by the postal system) so it's time to go back to our roots & to cherish the act of sending & receiving a letter.

i was rather late in coming to find the work of Robert Lax
& as Geof Huth writes about him in this link below,
"Every minimalist poet must come to terms with Lax."

a couple of months ago i came across a very affordable copy of "New Poems", published in 1962 by Journeyman Press, it was only $9.00 & i went ahead & got it, i was happy to get it from Jackson Street Books, which was the best bookshop in Athens Georgia when i was living there, but i was somewhat saddened to read the description of the book they offered, even moreso because it was coming from a well-seasoned bookdealer:

"In these new poems Robert Lax achieves an intense fusion of emotional force and classical simplicity." Here's a quote from page fourteen: "AAA/AAA/AAA/AAA" Repeat, more or less, three times and you have your classical simplicity. Lax is the key word here, folks. Light wear to covers & owner inkstamp to half-title. We're almost embarrased to sell this!"

& so it goes, this kind of reaction is all too common,
but oh well, each is each & own is own.

Gustave Morin ain't no typewriter poet, but he makes typewriter poetry. he hasn't trapp'd himself within any one specific mannerist cul de sac & operates inna broad range of differing procedures; this is a trait i admire, as how i admire artists like Martin Kippenberger & Sigmar Polke, artists who explore altering alternate alterations inna playful creativity -- as opposed to the "serious artist" who finds a "voice", a technique which gains them critical acceptance & then beats it like a dead fuckin' horse, once an artist is well-received for a particular aesthetic, it is usually the case that the artist will cultivate the schtick endlessly, repeat repeat repeat; more often than not, it's because those artists are operating from without themselves, meaning they look toward outside sources (critical reception) to guide their "vision" & actions. of course, the same applies to poets, once a poet "finds their voice" it seems as if they get caught inna dreary loop, snared by their own trap, exploiting their "trademark traits" over & over again like some cluck'd out cuckoo clock parodying themselves w/ perfect polish'd parrot chirps doom'd to remain caged within that particular setting where which the "critics" give 'em creamy crackers. squawk squawk. pollies all polly'd up inna plumage of false feathers, for many of them cannot actually even fly. and i'll be damn'd if Gustave Morin don't just fly, he fuckin' soars! his extensive body of work is like an aviary w/ many diverse species all living together & makin' a crazy racket only abuncha wildwing'd airstormers could make. i'm not denying or denouncing the importance of the critical apparatus, it is quite essential in many instances, esp for preserving works by writing about them & presenting the mechanics inna interpretive dissection, for initiating discussion, "close readings" are always interesting for those whom are concern'd about such intricate analysis of poetics. but i ain't no schoolboy, nor am i a critic : i just dig the shit i dig & when i diggit i diggit deep, like all inspired 'n shit, y'know? and NEIN TYPOS peels my banana in such a fruitful manner, it puts that "hellyeah!" fire under my ass & trips my trigger to bangaway. not since dom Sylvester Houédard has someone made the typewriter dance sucha lovely jig than Gustave has done w/ NEIN TYPOS & i just want'd to bring a little attention to it somehow by doing a review w/o doing a review. if you have any interest whatsoever in concrete poetry, typewriter poetry, or just plain inventive poetry, you owe it to yourself to grab a copy of this publication.

i think the Live Matter portfolios are one of the best series going, published by Reed Altemus's Tonerworks, itsa great way to present the work, i really like the concept Reed came up with. the portfolio comes inna nice folder w/ 6-10 single signed pages on pleasing archival quality paper inna edition of one hundred copies. at the time i order'd NEIN TYPOS, i also order'd Live Matters by Daniel f. Bradley, steve random, Brandstifter, Luc Fierens & Andrew Topel -- each one of which is mad bananas, total aces, incredibly eyesome -- i'm going to send off for additional editions when i have the funds available, i consider them to be affordable fine art & you won't know how lovely Live Matter is unless you get hold of the physical copies & experience their pages live for yourself. write to Reed Altemus for more info on how to obtain these wonderous things.
