I don't know, for some reason I'm thinking about the New Testament - less deranged than the Old Testament, but still pretty crazy. There are stories in a few of the Gospels about Jesus driving demons out of people, generally into pigs, which then run off and drown themselves. Understandably the locals get kind of pissy about it. Not quite sure what kind of message this was meant to send, or if they were all garbled versions of the same story, it's just always struck me as hilarious.

It must be something about the blue, the layering, maybe I associate it with mental illness, or Christianity. Who knows? Of course these days we're shovelling demons back in as quick as we can make them up. Shy? [Check] Then you might have social phobia, or generalised anxiety disorder - and hey, whaddya know, we got a pill for it. Anxious, unhappy? Boy have we got a library of stuff for you - adjustment disorder, generalised anxiety disorder again, lots of disorders. Compulsive behaviour? Well that's gotta be addiction - food addiction, sex addiction, violence addiction - now these we have rehab, special diets, pills, everything.

Still it's less harmful than literal belief in demons, everything up to physical assault to drive them out, using the fear of demons to repress any behaviour you don't like or understand...

The banner ad on my blog-stats webpage tells me I can chat with single Arabs. That's one weird bit of profiling. Preferable to facebook and their '38 and still single?' routine though - well yeah, what's it to ya? And why, when there's no preference on my profile are you assuming I'm straight? There's other possibilities y'know.

Anyway, back to Jebus and the pigs. One of the demoniacs he frees from possession is the one whose demons say 'I am legion'. Now tell me I'm talking out of turn here, but that seems to make the demon one of the few characters to talk any sense in the whole book. And I'm talking New Testament here - with God beating up on anyone who looks at him funny, Lot's daughters sleeping with him, prohibitions on the way you cut your hair, and all the other nonsense the Old testament doesn't even figure.

So... I don't even know what my point was anymore. Gah!

hey Matt:

odd synchronicity you commment via theologoumenon as earlier today i encountered something about black holes, how their gravitational pull is infinite & from such extremities, at center, time stops. truly brainmelting stuff, high physics etc & it made me think & i scribbled this little bit inna notebook:

redirecting, please wait.

god:
myriad massive black hole
slowly engulfing
the entire universe
w/ infinite gravipull
& time will cease to exist,
heaven.

i met a demon once, his name was Nameless & he chainsmoked like a tar-kiln, the bastard was always bummin' smokes offa me -- finally, after we drank up the 12pack, i piss'd in his infernal throat & summon'd my personal holhkunna, who show'd up in the form of a southern grey flying squirrel & we went thru the magic hat just like Bullwinkle pulls out & into Nemo's dreamland where Italian red wine flows downstream & cigarettes grow on trees, something like king of the road but more upbeat or as metaphor says: metempsychosis, Schrödinger's Cat & all that.

There was also the skeleton, prompting the thought that according to reports I've seen Sarah Palin doesn't believe in evolution. What kind of politician in the most militarily advanced country in the world, who might one day have responsibility for nuclear triggers, would happily admit to this kind of ignorance? My favourite books are Derek Jarman's Chroma, Bruce Chatwin's Songlines, Jaime Hernandez' Love and Rockets collections, Russell Hoban's Riddley Walker, and a bunch of others... BUT I don't go round ignoring scientific facts because the what's in the books is more attractive. To me that's not stupidity, it's not ignorance, it's just wilful obtuseness for no good reason. If you want to believe a magic entity created the universe you can believe that AND in evolution. And hey, there's evidence for evolution. I'm tempted by the Peter Pan route of advocating everyone stops believing in her in the hope that she'll just vanish.

But the blue... I like this, and kind of a side step from some of the recent stuff, which I also liked. I liked the palimpsest, Turin shroud vibe of the other recent things.

Palin is No-Choice, s/he/it ain't even female -- i like yr term " wilful obtuseness " & it's spot on, not only about Palin, but it's descriptive of many americans (many of whom can't even rightfully be called citizens, due to lack of concern about civic rights) -- u.s.a. celebrates tacky ignorance, reinforces it, & attacks any semblance of an intellectual discourse with that high-&-mighty wilful obtuseness you're talking about, the American language isn't English, it's dollarbills & bombs -- Team America Fuck Yeah ! (Let Sod Sort 'Em All Out) -- our national monetary units are emblazoned w/ "in god we trust" but not specifying which god, it's plain to see which deity u.s.a. really believes in, sadly.

the blue things are made from "daylight paper" which i scored atta junkstore a while back, i only had 5 sheets, so i cldn't experiment too much w/ exposure times etc. -- it's a kind of photographic paper that is exposed to sunlight -- most notably used by Man Ray, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy & Christian Schad --
" articles are placed on light-sensitive paper, which is directly exposed to the light; when the objects are removed, they leave behind their own peculiar outlines & traces "

Moholy sez:
" The photosensitive layer -- plate or paper -- is a tabula rasa, a blank page on which one can make notes with light in the same way that the painter works in a sovereign manner on the canvas with his own instruments of paint-brush and pigment. Whoever obtains a sense of writing with light by producing photograms without a camera, will be able to work in the most subtle way with the camera as well. "
1928 Bauhaus magazine

i think i'll actually seek out to buy some more of this paper if i can find it, i would prefer the black & white tho, as the grey tonalities are beautiful.
